During
just about every season, there is the opportunity to experience
some of the unique entertainment and heritage that the area has
to offer through one of the local festivals or special events.
From the third Saturday in June
through the fourth Sunday, Wytheville is buzzing with activities
for all ages as the annual Chautauqua Festival is underway. Chautauqua:
(pronounced sha tak' wa)... of Seneca Indian origin; takes its
name from Lake Chautauqua in Southwestern New York. Events include
children's activities, live nightly entertainment, arts and crafts,
hot air ballooning, magic, music, drama, dance and special exhibits.
On the fourth Saturday in September,
the Homestead Living History Festival is held adjacent to the
Regional Visitors Center. A variety of 19th Century daily life
activities such as molasses and apple butter making, blacksmithing,
and knitting and looming are demonstrated.
