Ivanhoe
From Wytheville,
take I-81 north to Exit 80, turn right onto US Route 52 south.
Go one mile and turn right on Route 94
(Ivanhoe Road). Ivanhoe is about 17.5 miles from Wytheville.
Over the past one hundred years, Ivanhoe has transformed from
a small farming community to an iron furnace boom town, then to
carbide manufacturing and later zinc mining. It began as Red Bluff
in 1840, and was named Ivanhoe in 1890.

21 Old Graded
"A" School
Take Hill Top Road (744) then to Painter Road (742) for 6/10 of
a mile. The school is located on the left and is now a vacant
dwelling. (Privately owned).
22 Old Black
School
On Mt. Carmel Road. Go to Painter Hill Road (742) then to Rakes
Town Road (601). Turn right on Powder Hill Road (644). The school
is presently a private dwelling that is located near the intersection
of Powder Hill Road, Mt. Carmel Road, and Pecan Lane.

23 Rosenwald
School
Take the Ivanhoe Road (Rt 94) to Ivanhoe
(17-1/2 miles) and turn left on Stranger Road.
Go about 1/10 of a mile and turn left. The school can be seen
about 150 yards in the distance.
24 Mt. Carmel
Church
Go to Painter Hill Road (742) then to Rakes
Town Road (601). Turn right on Powder Hill Road. Go to Mt. Carmel
Road and turn left.
The church is about 1/10 mile on the road

Cemetery
Take the Ivanhoe Road from Fort Chiswell. Go to the Slab Town
Road (694), turn left on Slab Road and go 4/10 mile to Floyd Avenue.

King Odd Fellow Lodge
Organized before
1902, the King Odd Fellow Lodge #4386 was the leading source of
education for African-American children in Ivanhoe, Virginia,
at the beginning of the 1900's. They are pictured here with the
ladies (Rising Star Society).
Reverend W.H. Pleasant
Believed to be
the Reverend W.H. Pleasant, who was the clergyman for the Franklin
Street M.E. Church for several years in the late 1880's. He was
one of the most respected preachers in the area and performed
over fifty marriages during his tenure as pastor.
