New-River-Foster-Falls

Austinville to Foster Falls

3.5 mi.     Point to Point     Easy-Moderate

This trip begins under the Route 636 bridge. This is a nice boat ramp with plenty of parking. Check out the Stephen F. Austin Memorial Park just up the hill. Stephen F. Austin, known as the “Father of Texas,” was born in Austinville, Virginia. The river is slow and deep at the put in and is home to channel catfish and muskellunge. Just after you go under the I-77 bridge you will see the historic Shot Tower on the ridge on river right. After passing the Shot Tower the river makes its way toward Foster Falls. Large concrete pillars, remnants of an old bridge, in the middle of the river tell you that you are approaching Foster Falls. To avoid the class III-IV rapid take out on river right at the New River Trail State Park boat ramp. Foster Falls, depending on water level, is a class III-IV rapid formed over more than 8 river wide ledges in the river. The river drops approximately 30 feet in 300 yards.
